Amelia’s Mechanics at the Deep River Music Festival

It was day one of the Deep River Music Festival.  Molly McGinn, Molly Miller, and Kasey Horton took to the stage as Amelia’s Mechanics.  Molly McGinn may be the funniest person I have ever met.

Amelia’s Mechanics was the first group of the two day music festival held in Franklinville, North Carolina.  Their outstanding original set was seen and heard only by the small audience lucky enough to have been there at the beginning of the festival.  We were lucky indeed.

The set was awesome.  The viola sounded like a viola.  Greensboro’s own Amelia’s Mechanics were loved by all.  They told stories and jokes while the others tuned their instruments.  Molly McGinn told a joke, and afterward said that her mother would kill her if she ever heard her tell that particular joke.  It was hilarious.  But I can’t repeat it.  I remember it, but my mother would kill me.

We had a great time.  I took a lot of pictures.  Obviously.

There were excellent performances on Saturday, too.  Coming soon : part three of the Deep River Music Festival featuring Greensboro’s Milltown, the Slaw River Ramblers (I’ll explain later), and a mandolin player from Atlanta who wore bunny ears and stayed up until the sun came up, with me and a few others.

Thanks Matty and all you fine folk at Monkeywhale! Having been one of the fortunate few to have attended that fine Friday nite line-up at The Deep River Music Festival, I’m left wondering why it seemed to be one of the best kept secrets around. Amelia’s Mechanics….awesome set from an awesome group! Can’t help but love those ladies! Seems like I recall some other fine performers taking the stage that evening as well, with both Eating The Invaders and Holy Ghost Tent Revival turning out special performances of their own. You just had to love the atmosphere with all those musicians either playing on stage or around the campfires! Love those photos and can’t wait for “Part 3″.

[...] bluegrass, but with a hint of the new grass feel, their set was polished.  However, like for Amelia’s Mechanics- the openers Friday night- the audience was slender.  We’ve got to get some bodies out there [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: The David Wax Museum

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. This trio from Boston came into our kitchen with homegrown produce and organic chocolate and a willingness to help begin the restoration of our ad-hoc badminton court in the backyard. They’ve opened for the Avett Brothers and their album, “The Carpenter Bird” was listed by the Boston Globe as [...]

Back in the days, Joshua and I used to do what we called “work” at a pizza joint. Work usually consisted of running a pizza in the morning for breakfast, collecting cigarette boxes and 20 oz bottles of soda in our cars and when it was really slow Josh would bust out his Saxophone [...]

Here’s something I’ve been looking forward to for months. Thanks in large part to our neighbor Heather and the kind staff of the Weatherspoon Art Museum we gained access to the inner workings of the art installation process and were able to interview Leo in our kitchen.
This was a collaborative effort as part of our [...]

Two songs just aren’t enough.  They came to our kitchen, braved the cold and the drizzle in the back yard and ate Indian food with us before returning to Brooklyn, NY.  Fear not, they’ll be returning to Greensboro on March 13th as part of our Monkeywhale presents series …
Many thanks to Jocelyn, Emily and Jeremy [...]

For the past 2 years monkeywhale and our kind neighbors have thrown a Halloween party.  Nothing fancy.  A couple of gazebos, a keg, strings of lights across the lawn and a few lanterns.  We also project films on the barn that have fallen into the public domain … like, Nosferatu for instance. Creepy and a [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Michael Ford Jr., and The Apache Relay

An Apache Relay is the pre-colonial version of a courier system.  Chiefs would compete against each other to see who could have a message delivered in the shortest amount of time.  A Relay of 8 scouts could hand a message over a quarter of a mile in 3 minutes.  Apparently.   Just imagine if they [...]
