Wendy Lou rocks our world. And possibly yours’, although you probably didn’t even know it. Wendy is a “satellite whale” (©2009 William Dawson) straight outta the kind city of Asheville, NC, where she works tirelessly day and especially night to hook up people and ideas and art and technology and business in ways you didn’t even know existed. Designer, developer, techie, writer, tweeter, blogger, photographer, event planner, educator, grant writer, networker…you name it, this lady can do it and do it well. And all of these things are done with passion, enthusiasm and energy that frankly leaves us speechless.
In the past year Wendy Lou has taught us more than we can begin to explain about all sorts of important things from how to effectively use Twitter and all sorts of social media to which vitamins to take to avoid a hangover to special Mario Kart moves that we’d rather not share here. All joking aside, this woman is a genius and she works really, really hard (often for no money) to make sucesses out of people and pursuits in which she believes. What’s not to love? Talk to anybody in Asheville who’s using technology to better promote and expand their business and they know Wendy Lou. Talk to some of the best musicians and artists in Asheville (like Now You See Them, for example) who are serious about making a living out of their craft and they know Wendy Lou (and she’s told them about monkeywhale!) . Talk to anyone who’s involved in community building or green projects or local media and they know Wendy Lou.
Perhaps best of all, Wendy Lou is a calm and amazingly helpful presence in the eye of a storm. During two of our biggest and craziest events of the last year (48 Hour Film Project and Save the Monkeywhale Festival 2009) Wendy Lou could be found doing all sorts of things that we desperately needed. In the mornings she was here at our house making delicious breakfasts for very sleepy people, uploading photos, tweeting about our events, linking us up with helpful people while we were deep in our own editing or shooting or whatever was happening at that moment. At night she was carting around drunk musicians and gear, watching over the “merch” table, helping with anything and everything that needing doing. This is how Wendy Lou rolls. She makes herself invaluable with contagious laughter and excitement that reminds the rest of us why we got started on these crazy projects anyway.
Check out Wendy’s work, follow her on Twitter and you know what else? Hire her. Or do a trade with her. Or find a way to promote her and find someone who can pay her. That’s right, I said it. 2010 needs to be about paying up, people, or at least about reciprocity. There are a whole lot of talented people doing a whole lot of work for free around these parts and we all want to see that change. So Wendy Lou is a good place to start. Hopefully we’ll be bringing her back to Greensboro for some Tweeting info sessions, among other things. In the meantime….a big thank you to Wendy Lou for all she has done for the Monkeywhale. This lady has been saving it up without recognition for quite some time.
