More violence to come? Hope not.

The nice guy you always see at Red Mike’s grocery store on the corner of Fisher and N. Elm street, downtown Greensboro, was shot to death Sunday morning at around 9:40am.  Mohammed “Mike” Ali was always gracious to me, and many others in the neighborhood.  He was three classes away from getting his computer science degree, and four days away from marrying his fiancee.  I think I still owe him forty cents for cigarettes.

This, just four or five blocks away from where Billy “Ransom Notes” Hobo Hobbs and Debra Moy were very disturbingly beaten and set on fire.  Ransom’s memorial was held at the Empire Room on Elm street and was very well attended.

I’m not an investigator or a journalist.  I just knew these people, and while I don’t believe these two heinous acts are connected, I feel this is not the Greensboro I moved to fifteen years ago.

Coming from a suburb of Albany, New York, and having grown up in different parts of New England, I still lock my doors incessantly.  Now with this new tone of violence so close to home I am concerned for my friends and neighbors.

Lock your doors.

Look out for your neighbors.  Just because we have a new President-Elect doesn’t mean everything is hunky freakin’ dory.  Maybe it’s a step in the right direction.  Maybe it means we aren’t as unconnected as we thought.

Save the neighborhood, save the Monkeywhale.

Well said Matty. Senseless, terrible stuff right here in our ‘hood and no answers anywhere. The neighborhoods are definitely shaken up and hoping for some or any information from the police. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims whose grief we can not begin to imagine.

Harvey’s Kitchen — Frontier Ruckus. The Latter Days

Spring 2009 in Greensboro, NC has been marked by torrents of rain. Mosquitoes are now happily frolicking in flocks awaiting a warm vein. Watering tomato plants can be hazardous and a few residents found their cars underwater in parking lots after thunderous thirty minute lunches.
Frontier Ruckus, now signed to the Concord, NC Ramseur Records arrived [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen — Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers. Songs in the Night.

Here’s another video … Samantha and Frontier Ruckus were at the house at the same time so here they are together.  Songs in the Night.
When focused, Ms. Crain — with turquoise tights screaming out from between a beige print dress and red cowboy boots — was captivating. Her pleading, slightly distant intonation recalled early-1990s Britpop, [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen — Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers. Rising Sun.

Samantha arrived on the same day as Frontier Ruckus, both bands on the influential Concord, NC based label, Ramseur Records.  The music was so lovely all afternoon I had a difficult time remembering why I was ever frustrated or stressed out about anything at all.  As my friend Vijay would say, “Harvey, what a life!”
Samantha [...]
