Harvey’s Kitchen: Junior League Band

“The Junior League Band is an old-time inspired rock band fronted by the Georgia grown banjo, vocalist, Lissy Rosemont. Based out of Washington, DC, this nationally touring band has been compared to “Alison Krauss and the Band” by the Washington Post, and touts Levon Helm’s own horn players on their catchy single “South Carolina Blues.” [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Anna Vogelzang, Tiny Monsters

“Anna Vogelzang is a songwriter splitting her time between Madison, WI and Chicago. She has shared the stage with the likes of Regina Spektor, Deer Tick, and Nat Baldwin, among others. Her fifth studio album, Paper Boats, was released earlier this year by Slothtrop Records.”
Dark altostratus clouds were encroaching into our neighborhood as we set up [...]

New Jersey. Yes, this band is from New Jersey. They’ve performed on the Conan O’Brien show, been featured by Spin Magazine, performed at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Coachella, and were formerly signed to Drive-Thru Records.
We had to wait until close to the release date of their newest album, “Steel Train” before we could post [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Amelia’s Mechanics, Part 1

Around a year ago, Molly McGinn ventured into our kitchen with a small outfit she hustled together from local musicians which she fondly called her “Buster Dillys.”
Over the course of the following 15 months or so she encountered Molly Miller and together with Kasey Horton they formed Amelia’s Mechanics, very quickly releasing their first album, [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: The David Wax Museum

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. This trio from Boston came into our kitchen with homegrown produce and organic chocolate and a willingness to help begin the restoration of our ad-hoc badminton court in the backyard. They’ve opened for the Avett Brothers and their album, “The Carpenter Bird” was listed by the Boston Globe as [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Joshua West

Back in the days, Joshua and I used to do what we called “work” at a pizza joint. Work usually consisted of running a pizza in the morning for breakfast, collecting cigarette boxes and 20 oz bottles of soda in our cars and when it was really slow Josh would bust out his Saxophone [...]

Existed: Leonardo Drew

Here’s something I’ve been looking forward to for months. Thanks in large part to our neighbor Heather and the kind staff of the Weatherspoon Art Museum we gained access to the inner workings of the art installation process and were able to interview Leo in our kitchen.
This was a collaborative effort as part of our [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Pearl and the Beard, Lost in Singapore

Two songs just aren’t enough.  They came to our kitchen, braved the cold and the drizzle in the back yard and ate Indian food with us before returning to Brooklyn, NY.  Fear not, they’ll be returning to Greensboro on March 13th as part of our Monkeywhale presents series …
Many thanks to Jocelyn, Emily and Jeremy [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Pearl and the Beard, Vessel

For the past 2 years monkeywhale and our kind neighbors have thrown a Halloween party.  Nothing fancy.  A couple of gazebos, a keg, strings of lights across the lawn and a few lanterns.  We also project films on the barn that have fallen into the public domain … like, Nosferatu for instance. Creepy and a [...]

Harvey’s Kitchen: Jill Andrews, City Noise

Here’s a second song from Jill Andrews.  Things were going well in the kitchen so we recorded another song as a single take.  We’re really happy that Jill chose monkeywhale.com to preview her new material.  Really fabulous stuff.  We think you’ll be hearing a lot more about her in the coming months.

Harvey’s Kitchen — Filthybird. Now, I know better.

Filthybird.  Now, I know better.
This marks the 50th Harvey’s Kitchen video since we began in the final week of October, 2008.  It has probably been the steepest learning curve in all manner of aspects in my life.  Work.  Play.  Relationships.  Audio.  Camera Technique.  Business. Lack of business.  Joy.
This band, is a collection of really talented [...]

You are now watching: Harvey’s Kitchen: Junior League Band

“The Junior League Band is an old-time inspired rock band fronted by the Georgia grown banjo, vocalist, Lissy Rosemont. Based out of Washington, DC, this nationally touring band has been compared to “Alison Krauss and the Band” by the Washington Post, and touts Levon Helm’s own horn players on their catchy single “South Carolina Blues.”  Rosemont has been referred to as one of the “most promising up and coming vocalists on the Americana scene” (Bristol Rythm and Roots Festival) as well as recorded in the studio her old-time banjo with acts such as Missy Elliott and the Pussy Cat Dolls. Rosemont’s family runs the oldest fiddler’s festival in the country, the Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention in Union Grove, NC. The 5 instrumentalists merge these influences with delta blues and pop rock (50’s to Indie Rock) to make for an energetic, sing-song, string heavy, danceable yet mesmerizing live performance. Expect a show ripe with catchy melodies, toe tapping beats, sweet vocals, and some of the countries most talented up and coming players.”  – juniorleagueband.com
I had big plans to finish this session prior to the July 16th release date of their new album, “Jelly Roll”  … and as I look at the current date I see it’s only July 12th.  Woo.  Good for me.
Keep an eye on this band as they rise in the charts.  Many thanks for the lovely visit.
