We Are All Broke…So Here’s Some Free Movies!
So, Here’s the thing…times are tough. I don’t have a lot of extra cash lately, which has made going to the theater to see movies less possible for me. Which, in turn, has made it even more difficult for me to write reviews of new movies…because I haven’t been seeing many. Luckily, I have recently found something unique and very, very cool online. Seems there is this website called HULU.com that lets you view movies and television shows on you computer…for FREE. That’s www.hulu.com. That’s right kids, free movies and T.V. shows. Could there be anything cooler? I would likely answer no, not sure about you. Actually, now that I think about it, there could be many, many things much cooler. But for now, I’ll take this.
I know what you are thinking, “if it’s free, there has to be a catch.” Well, you are sort of right. There is a catch. It’s mostly older movies, and not really many good ones at that. They have stuff like No Way Out, Who’s Harry Crumb, Single White Female, etc. Like I said, mainly older movies with a few more recent titles thrown into the mix. They do have some little foreign gems as well such as Abre Los Ojos, which is the Spanish language film Cameron Crowe remade into the horribly underrated Vanilla Sky. The really cool thing is that, right now, they are premiering small movies that are currently playing in the ongoing SXSW festival. So, for those of us not cool enough to get to Texas for that wonderful event, we can still experience some of its treasures here at home. I suggest starting with Yeast, a micro-budget indie starring Greta Gerwig, whom I just raved about in my review of Baghead. Remember her name.
If television is your thing, then Hulu is absolute bliss. Here you can watch all new episodes of many of your favorite, and television’s most popular, shows. It’s better than DVR, I dare say, cause you can watch them anywhere, with only a few blips and pauses in the action. In fact, I just finished watching the most recent episode of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse series, at The Green Bean. It premiered on FOX Network just this past Friday night. Nice. It’s great for me, because I work most nights, and have no time to watch any television. I’m sure there are lots of people out there who would really appreciate that option. They have the most recent episodes of The Office, Family Guy, The Simpsons, 30 Rock, and even many of the more popular “reality” shows that I myself refuse to watch, but remain very popular. It’s also a great place to start watching shows you have never seen before.
If you’ve got some time to kill online and want to catch up on your favorite shows, or revisit an old favorite movie, or even check out a current release indie, I highly recommend checking out HULU.com. My hope is that this site will be a smash hit and be able to bring more recent movie releases, and a better quality of films to the mix…perhaps even major current releases at some point. And continue to do it for free. Because there are many of us out there who can’t afford to go out much.
Also, for those of you out there who have not yet experienced Joss Whedon’s web mini-series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, you can see it here for free. Seriously, Neil Patrick Harris playing an aspiring super villain and Nathan Fillion playing his wholly self-involved tormentor/super hero in a musical extravaganza. Three episodes that add up to 45 minutes of pure comic/dramatic bliss. Check it out.
