Consider Shoes on Inauguration Day

0 Comments 15 Jan, 2009

In the next few days an estimated 3 million people will start descending upon our nation’s capital. You’ve already heard about the lack of parking, the $9,000 a night hotel rooms, the slight problem of a potential shortage of Port-A-Potties (oh, you hadn’t heard about that? Wish you were going now?), the vendors, the parades, the school bands, the celebrities, the black tie and boots ball, the beefed up security etc. etc.
It’s going to be a big old party no matter how bad the economy is, so if you’re one of the people lucky enough to be attending you’re probably already in celebratory mode.

Another way to pass your time while in D.C? Protest, baby. You betcha, there are going to be some protesters out and about and what better way to celebrate a new president than to remind us how bad the old one is? If you’re feeling like you’d like someone else to take the lead in all this outrage consider the “Yes We Can Arrest Bush” event. The organizers of this one stress that it will be not so much a protest as a celebratory event and will take place in front of the FBI Building during the Inaugural Parade. I’m sure you don’t have to worry about any one taking your photo and making a few notes on your “file” while you’re partaking in it. Really, they already know everything about you anyway. The event is sponsored by the Washington Peace Center, After Downing Street and Shoes For Bush.

What’s that about shoes? Oh yes, you may already be a member of the Facebook group Shoes For Bush or perhaps you’ve just watched the shoe-hurler video on YouTube over and over again until you thought you might die laughing. Now is your chance to embrace all that anger you’ve got stored up about what the Bush administration has done in the last eight years or maybe just all those thoughts about how fun it would be to throw your shoes at someone.

On January 19 (okay, so actually a day before Inauguration Day) the public is invited to take part in the Convergence at the Peace Fair at DuPont Circle at 11am which will be followed by a Shoe Throwing at the White House. This is not a joke. Read all about it. And to top it off, all the shoes will be donated to those in need after the event. Just don’t forget to bring a second pair.

Sounds pretty sweet to me. Anyone doing one here in G.Boro? Monkeywhale would be sooo up in it!
