Wanda Sykes is one of my favorite ladies around. Whether it’s her stand-up (“Drink man…”), her appearances on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, (“Larry! You gotta turn the power on!”) or her various roles in movies and tv this woman will make you laugh until you cry.
On Saturday, Sykes joined thousands of people around the country who took part in protests of California’s passage of Proposition 8 (which re-bans gay marriage). Sykes spoke at a rally in Vegas and while she was there mentioned she is gay. This was a surprise to organizers, but I imagine the publicity that has followed was quite welcome.
Wanda is mad and not going to take it anymore. She said she’s never felt a need to speak publicly about her sexual orientation until the passage of Prop 8 which makes her feel “attacked”.
“I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay,” she said. “That’s the way people should be able to live their lives.” Amen. Did I mention she was awesome?
