8 Comments 11 Apr, 2009

ArtBeat Greensboro is a weeklong celebration of the Arts, May 1st – 10th 2009.

He was born in Baku, Azerbaijan to violinist Julian Sitkovetsky and pianist Bella Davidovich. His father died in 1958, when Sitkovetsky was three years old. He grew up in Moscow. He studied there at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1977, aged twenty-two, he decided he wanted to leave the Soviet Union, so he faked a career ending ailment to avoid the draft and help in his emigration request.

When he arrived in the United States he attended the Julliard School of Music and in 1979 he won the Kreistler Competition in Vienna.

A world renowned violinist, he is currently the Conductor for the Greensboro Symphony, principal guest conductor for the Moscow State Orchestra and architect of the European Strings Orchestra.

As part of Artbeat, the Greensboro Symphony will be performing Gustav Holst’s The Planets in conjunction with the projection of NASA photographs of our solar system.  If the exploration of space is something that really excites you, you should check out the progress of local filmmaker  Stephen Van Vuuren’s IMAX dream project that takes us through the solar system in three dimensions using NASA high resolution images.  He’ll be in our kitchen soon to talk about it.
