Harvey’s Kitchen — Piece Work. Touring Theatre of North Carolina.

0 Comments 21 Apr, 2009

ArtBeat Greensboro is a weeklong celebration of the Arts.  May 1st-10th.

Full disclosure.  I did formerly work with the Touring Theatre of North Carolina and Brenda Schleunes for around 8 years as an actor.  It was an unusual role reversal.  A true pleasure.

This collaboration between Barbara Presnell and Brenda is the kind in which Touring Theatre of North Carolina has been actively engaged for over 20 years.  Transforming literature, court documents, diaries, and poetry into pieces of minimalist theater that encourage audiences to engage their imaginations and often tackle difficult subjects in unapolagetic ways.

Brenda Schleunes is the recent recipient of the O’Henry Award.

Per artbeatgreensboro.org:

Life in the mill villages wasn’t just about the mills. People fell in love. Went to prom. Passed on traditions, stories, a family name and the family pictures.

That’s why artists in several arts disciplines – fine art documentary photography, theater, poetry, music and documentary film – will piece together their work to tell the story about the way of life in the area’s mill villages. Past and present.

The three-day event begins Friday May 1 with Piece Work a theatrical adaptation of a book of poetry of the same name written by Asheboro-based writer Barbara Presnell. The play, adapted by Touring Theatre of North Carolina, debuts at the Greensboro Historical Museum.
