ArtBeat Greensboro is a weeklong celebration of the Arts May 1st-10th, 2009.
Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the regional not-for-profit Triad Stage, Preston Lane sits down in our kitchen to talk about Matadors, Polka, Peanut the Horse and the creative process. Together with Laurelyn Dossett he has authored, Beautiful Star: An Appalachian Nativity, Bloody Blackbeard and the much anticipated Providence Gap.
For most of the year Preston keeps something close to an insane schedule (he’s currently working on an adaptation of Moliere’s Tartuffe for a production in June), juggling his duties as Artistic Director. He is also the Artistic Partner of Theater for an Appalachian Summer Festival.
Preston was recently honored with the 2008 Betty Cone Medal of the Arts.
During the week of ArtBeat, Triad Stage will be performing a new comedy by Robert Hewett, The Blonde, the Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead.

I find it striking that his musical favorites include the Lawrence Welk Show, Dolly Parton, and Laurelyn Dossett. Makes me think Laurelyn really needs some Texas hair. Or bubbles.

I enjoyed this interview. I learned new facts about Preston that I did not know. The horse story is funny…and John loved to hear that Preston used to like “Hee-Haw”! Preston is so talented, and aren’t we lucky in the Triad to have him among us! The plays at Triad Stage have all been outstanding! When I was still teaching, this theater added so much to the experiences of my students. I hope I have encouraged most of them to love live theater as much as I do! What a good place to start!
